The term caning is sometimes used as an umbrella for a range of woven seats and backs. It even appears from time to time on doors and dresser and table tops. Services available from J & J Woodworking include an array of patterns woven in cane, as well as fiber rush, splint, Shaker tape, Danish cord, and seagrass.

Methods and Materials

Cane
Applied as a pre-woven roll (machine cane) or woven on the chair strand by strand (hand cane).
Made from the bark and rings of the rattan palm.
Many patterns are possible
Rush and Danish Cord
Natural rush is also called pre-twisted sea grass.
Fiber rush is a strong twisted paper material available in a range of diameters.
Danish cord is a braided form of fiber rush.
All can be woven onto a chair in a variety of patterns.
Splint, Binder Cane, and Shaker Tape
Splint and binder cane often appear in a herringbone pattern.
Shaker tape is a cotton material usually woven in a checkerboard pattern.
All three are durable and can be used in a variety of applications.
Wicker
Wicker furniture comes in many shapes and sizes.
It is sometimes possible to repair small sections.
